Howard
won the hearts of everyone at the shelter where his owners dumped him,
probably because their puppy grew to full size and needed training.
Luckily, Howard's unusual looks caught the eye of a DAWG volunteer,
and then his personality caught her heart too!
Howard is learning manners
and is a rapt student when a treat is his reward, but he also responds
to praise. He takes treats carefully as if they are treasures --
funny! Howard is doing well with "sit," "shake," and "down," and is
certain to be a star pupil when he gets lots of exercise to help him
focus on his lessons.
Howard is submissive to
full-sized children and adults. He throws his hind leg way back when on
his side, the ultimate acknowledgment of a superior presence in "dog
language." The only concern we have is that Howard would not be good
with little kids (pre-school). We watched him recently when he looked at
a child who was his height. He couldn't understand the alien human he
was looking at! We are just explaining Howard how he is with us, not his
potential, which is limitless.
