What is it like to be circled by buzzards? Howie knows.

Howie was spotted by two DAWG volunteers while they were passing through rural Florida while on vacation. They pulled over in the brutal heat and saw a dog, in their words "being eaten alive by insects, with buzzards literally circling." The dog had obviously crawled off into the brush to die. Our volunteers somehow got the dog into their car and sped off to the local shelter.

These were taken when Howie was found lying in the field:

The shelter nursed him back to health and kept him for as long as possible, but all shelters have time limits. So our volunteers approached DAWG and asked if we could possibly help Howie. How could we not?

Read our volunteers' version of Howie's story on http://jpgmag.com/stories/6190, which includes a You Tube video of Howie, fully recovered and racing with another dog at the Florida shelter. Who knew he was a party boy, just as sweet as you can get, and full of fun, fun, FUN!

Howie was transported to Maryland on August 29. A new chapter of Howie's life has begun! There are some dogs (and people) who have a miserable start at life, but somehow they get the chances they need to survive and thrive. Howie is one of those remarkably lucky creatures and truly deserving of all the love and care that has been showered on him. Howie's volunteer "mom" thinks Howie's personality is what saved him for so long at the shelter, and what will make people do double-takes at our adoption shows.

Howie has a sweet, goofy, lovable nature. He's playful and easy going. He LOVES his people and will be a loyal companion. We also learned Howie's a lady's..er...dog, because he sure did like the female dogs at the shelter, but he isn't so happy about being around other male dogs who try to show dominance. Howie doesn't pick fights, but all dogs have limits with bullies!
