When you meet Keefer, it may seem like he has had the most loving care and interaction. However, his background was "anything but."

Keefer's story started in early 2006, when he was a pup on a chain in a man's backyard. A DAWG board member, who is also an animal cruelty investigator, alerted Animal Control about her suspicion that Keefer (not his name at the time) was not well. When Animal Control arrived, it immediately seized Keefer. He was in terrible condition due to mange and secondary infections throughout his body.

From his first day at the animal hospital, all Keefer wanted to do was to snuggle with the people taking care of him. When he healed sufficiently, he underwent entropion eye surgery (his picture shows him -- a bit puffy and red-eyed -- only a week after eye surgery). Finally, Keefer is well and -- even better -- he can see without irritation.

Keefer had a blast at his first adoption show, and settled easily after he inspected the entire store like a kid in a candy store! He tossed around toys and chowed down treats offered by delighted visitors and volunteers alike. He knew he was the star!

Every dog is special, but Keefer -- whose name means "handsome" and "beloved" in Gaelic -- is remarkable in every sense of the word. Keefer is a big boy but he is not wild. For the limited leash-walking practice he has had, Keefer is pretty mindful of his walking buddy. Keefer needs a yard to romp in, and if he is adopted by a family, the children should be older so he doesn't accidentally knock them over.

Keefer is a gentle dog, full of love without reservation. He's ready to move on and become a treasured friend to someone or a family who will love him forever. Be sure to ask about Keefer and plan on meeting him soon
