Rex was dumped by his family at a local shelter at 6 years of age. We don't know why, other than dogs of any age -- puppies and elderly -- are routinely turned into shelters. At any rate, Rex caught our intake volunteer's attention because of his great personality and eye contact. Well, ok, Rex was the most handsome dog at the shelter as well! Who could resist a smiling dog with a gleaming auburn and black coat!

Rex is extremely smart and easily learned basic commands at shows including catching treats mid-air. Way to go, Rex! Rex is the sort of dog that almost demands learning, as if he wants to skip grade school so he can go to college. He is filled with curiosity and also a lot of energy to burn.

Rex is what we call a project dog, in that he is a resource guarder (guards his food and things like bones). We didn't realize he did this at the time we selected him. Resource guarding is a trait that doesn't make Rex an adoption candidate for people who have children or not much experience with dogs. Rex can be "fixed" by someone who has patience and the ability to work with him and a professional trainer. In that regard, DAWG will be willing to waive an adoption fee provided his future adopter enlists the help of a professional trainer and follows whatever course of action the trainer recommends.
