Samson
spent most of his life in North Carolina, where he lived in a
puppy mill until it was raided and dogs were disbursed to various
shelters. Samson and other siblings headed to Maryland, where he was
put into a private shelter that had to close before he was adopted.
We decided to take this little guy because, although timid, he stood
at his cage door wagging just a little bit, almost an invitation to
meet him.
For the first three
days in his new foster home, Samson huddled in a corner and refused
to move except to bravely venture forth to have some food. Each day
Samson's foster mom moved his food dish further and further away
from him. A little motivation helped: a piece of chicken on top of
the kibble! Eventually Samson was fearless in doing anything but one
thing: being touched. One day his foster mom said "This is it! Up
you go." Samson was in her arms. EEK! After that, he learned that
caresses are a good thing too.
Today, Samson scampers around the house,
sometimes in laps, and he stands on his hind legs to give his foster
mom a nose bump (equivalent to a kiss) every so often. Samson
is "cured" of his fears, but will always be cautious.
Oh, one other thing. Samson LOVES his
girlfriend, an older lab, who rolls her eyes when he greets her.
Samson is probably fine with all dogs, although logically he
shouldn't go to a home where a large, goofy dog could accidentally
hurt him.
Samson hardly barks, although he will do so
when he wants his foster mom to look at him. Samson is more than a
joy; he's an amazing, funny, great dog awaiting the home he has
deserved all his life. FINALLY!
