and legislators with a conscience pushing for humane  treatment of farm animals after a film exposed cruelty  -- back in the 1950s!

 3.  A special message for Maryland residents:

Maryland residents: Show Up in Support of Foie Gras  Ban Bill
Hearings have been scheduled for S.B. 599 and H.B.  1137, legislation introduced by Senator Joan  Carter-Conway and Delegate Tanya Shewell, to ban foie gras produced by force-feeding, as well as the sale of  this product in Maryland. Here are details for hearings for S.B. 599 and H.B. 1137:

 Tuesday, March 4  1:00 p.m.
Senate Education, Health & Environmental Affairs
 Committee
2 West, Miller Senate Building, Annapolis

 Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - 1:00 p.m.
 House Environmental Matters Committee
Room 251, House Office Bldg, 6 Bladen St., Annapolis

No need to testify at the hearing - your presence  alone will help. If possible, while there, we will  assist you in speaking to your legislators. Your
attendance at the hearings could be the key to the  bills' passage.

Whether you attend either hearing, please take a moment right now to call AND email your state (not  federal) senator and ask that s/he support S.B. 599,
and ask your state delegate to support H.B. 1137, to  ban the cruel production and sale of foie gras in  Maryland. You can look up their names and contact
 information at  http://mdelect.net/electedofficials

. Foie gras is produced by confining birds (usually  ducks) inside tiny pens or individual cages and  force-feeding them up to a third of their own body weight daily. In just a few weeks, the force feeding  causes the birds' livers to swell up to 10 times their  normal size and develop a diseased state of hepatic
lipidosis that leaves them unable to walk, stand or  even breathe without extreme pain.

. One former worker at a large North American foie  gras production
facility recounts that his supervisor told him, "The  point of gavage
[force feeding] is to make a duck as sick as  possible, to bring them to
 the brink of death."

. Foie gras production is so cruel that California,  Chicago and more
than a dozen countries have banned foie gras sales and/or production.

. Close to 80% of Americans polled by Zogby  International oppose the force feeding of birds for  foie gras production and favor a ban.
